WHEN?!
When I was 26 years old I was living on Long Island, married and driving a school bus. One day while I was waiting for an after school activities team, I was sitting on the bus next to mine chatting with the driver. She was older than I; I guess she was in her mid 40’s and she was dressed very uassumedly.
At one point in our chatting the conversation turned to my being a certified teacher and how I was not going to be a bus driver all my life. “When?!”, she said. I was caught off guard by the abrupt nature of the question and stuttered something about getting my application into the school district when she said, “When”? Feeling very uncomfortable I reiterated my awkward plan and she said “When?!”
Gratefully, it was time to leave and let the children on the bus, but her question “When?!” was stinging my conscience.
I filled my application at the next available date and starting subbing in Physical Education right away. I used to sub at the HS and then pick the students up in the bus for their sports immediately after. As for the Lady bus driver. I never saw her again. That was sometime in early April 1978.
I was as substitute teacher for the following year. In April of 1979 my husband was diagnosed with lung cancer. It had already spread to his hip and leg. He crossed over 4 months later on August 16, 1979. The day after Labor Day only, two and a half weeks later, I started my first full time position as a teacher.
I was able to support myself and had built a community within the district. I could have been trying to survive on a part time salary had it not been for the prodding When?!
I am retiring this year after 30 wonderful, successful years as a teacher. I cannot think of any other way I would have wanted to live my life.
I am very grateful to that woman/angel who came into my life to urge me onto my life’s path with one word… When?!

An Angel Spoke to Me
It used to be an unusual occurrence or is it just that we misunderstood “Angel Speak”.
“Angel Speak” is a truth that touches your heart and changes something in you and your life forever. It may be spoken or received in other means.
Recently, it seems to be a more recognized occurrence. I bet that when you think about it you can find occurrences in your life where you know in your heart… An Angel Spoke to Me.
I was walking my dog with my neighbor Jean the other day and we came to a point in the conversation were she said, “ I don’t usually tell this to anyone but…” and I said, emphatically, “You can tell me anything”.
Jean continued to share a story about a time when she had been going through a long-term struggle and was weary of it. She stopped in somewhere to have a cup of coffee and as she sat sipping she noticed a woman with the happiest demeanor. The lady didn’t look as if she had something to be especially happy about. Her pants had a tear in the knee which exposed her knee obviously as her raised leg sported the view but she just seemed happy. My neighbor, soon becoming a friend, refocused on her coffee but felt gladdened by the other woman’s spirit. Within a moments time she was startled by the presence of the other woman right there adjacent to her table and she looked up. The woman spoke, “I just had to tell you how happy you look .” My friend was surprised and realized she did indeed feel happy. The woman continued, “It makes the struggle all worthwhile; doesn’t it?” My friend nodded and the woman walked way.
How did she know of her struggles and why did she feel better?
From that day forward, Jean, wondered about the woman at the coffee house. Was she an Angel? She had helped my friend turn a corner in her life so meaningful that she vividly retells the story with an awesome presence. ” Was that an Angel?”, Jean asked. “Why not?”, I answered. Angels come in many forms and leave with the aplomb with which they arrive; no fuss no bother.
My friend muses, “I have often wondered if anyone else in the place saw her or if they just saw me talking to myself”. I told her what a dear teacher of mine told me, “Everyone sees what he or she needs to see”.
I told her, “If she was there for you, it is possible that no one else had reason to see or notice her and I am doubtful that they would notice your interaction”.
Angel’s come in all shapes and forms sometimes they present in their glorious wonder and most time they “tune down” to fit our needs.
Have you had an encounter with an angel? Or do you think you have? Does something about a certain meeting gnaw at you in a pleasant yet eerie way? Did a simple word or conversation set you on a different path or heal you?
